1. When Swamp Dogg was on The Sound of Young America, he told the story of writing this song, (Don’t Take Her) She’s All I Got, for Johnny Paycheck. It was a #1 country hit, and won “Song of the Year” at the CMAs. The best part was when he described the audible gasp in the crowd when they realized that the Jerry Williams, Jr. who’d written the tune was a portly 5’8” black guy who was probably better known as Swamp Dogg, a soul singer who recorded songs like “California is Drowning and I Live Down By The River” and made album covers with pictures of him sitting in his underpants in a pile of garbage and riding a giant rat.
